The manor that houses the Historical and Artistic Museum of Maranhão is one of the main tourist attractions of the State. Its construction dates from 1836 and it was home to three families representing the local elite: that of Major Ignácio Gomes de Souza, father of one of our greatest intellectuals, Souzinha; that of Alexandre Colares Moreira, active in State policy and that of José Francisco Jorge, a large textile manufacturer in Maranhão.
Major Ignácio Gomes de Souza resided in the manor until 1857, when it was sold to the Colares Moreira family. In 1918, the manor came to belong to the family of José Francisco Jorge, who remained there until 1967, when the State government represented by José Sarney bought it for the purpose of installing the Historical and Artistic Museum of Maranhão / MHAM.
The manor house stands out for the beauty of its colonial architecture, rich in all features: from the floor covered with river pebbles to the sophisticated chandeliers, from the stone balconies that refer to the impressive view of the beautiful garden of the house.
Whoever enters the Historical and Artistic Museum of Maranhão has the feeling that an era was crystallized in time. Finally, each wall, each corner, each corridor houses a piece of socio-cultural memory from different eras and the current museological conception puts it on an equal footing with the best museums in the country.
