The district capital is the city of Zaña, located on the right bank of the Zaña River, 50 meters above sea level. and 46.1 km. from the city of Chiclayo. It was founded on November 29, 1563 by Captain Baltazar Rodríguez, in compliance with the mandate of Viceroy Diego López de Zúñiga (on April 25 of the same year). The name given to it was Santiago de Miraflores and it occupied the place where a dairy farm existed and crossed the Inca road, being for a long time the pass and the obligatory rest on the colonial route from Paita to the South. Through its Chérrepe port, Zaña exported flour, sugar, hides, soaps and other merchandise.
Since its founding, the development of Zaña had good prospects, but it was also frustrated on several occasions. In 1586, 1a a violent flood was surprised; in 1618, a strong earthquake destroyed several houses, in 1686, Zaña was subjected to a terrible looting by the pirate Eduardo David; in 1703, a new earthquake struck it; and on March 15, 1720, the waters of the Zaña River, violently and surprisingly, buried a large part of the town. This latest disaster marks the economic and political decline of Zaña, but not the end of the natural disasters; these continued (1728, 1925, 1983).
As a reminder of its former splendor, the walls and arches of its San Agustín, San Francisco, La Merced and San Juan de Dios temples and convents remain semi-buried.
The Zaña district was created at the time of Independence, integrating the province of Lambayeque, from which it dismembered in 1835, to form the province of Chiclayo.
It is located in the Chala region, in the central part of the Chiclayo province; it has the following limits: To the North, with the districts of Chongoyape, Picci and Chiclayo; to the South, with the district of Lagunas and the province of Chepén; to the East, with the districts of Nueva Arica and Oyotún; to the West, with the districts of Reque and Eten.
The main ones are the sugar agribusiness, agriculture, livestock, artisanal production of sweets and small mining. In the Zaña district there are the Pucalá and Cayaltí sugar factories, which constitute more dynamic development and population centers than the district capital. Likewise, the factory of Compañía Papelera y Celulósica del Norte is located.
Its main crops are sugar cane, rice and corn. The inhabitants of the city of Zaña produce famous sweets, with which they go to the various fair; of the department and the region
