The construction of the Steps of the Passion in the ancient Brazilian cities is an old Portuguese tradition, and comes from the medieval custom in Europe. They are small chapels or oratories related to the Stations or Steps of the Lord's Passion modest and often included in a construction, contain images and religious pieces, before which the processions of Holy Week stop for liturgical songs and prayers. These chapels are closed by doors, which open once a year when they are decorated with flowers. They are then closed until the following year. The procession symbolically carries out the path of Calvary. In Tiradentes the Steps began to be constructed from 1719 and add six scattered by the city.
