In the early 1960s, an old jail for ecclesiastical prisoners of the colonial period was restored and listed by the Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) to house an exhibition of works donated by Assis Chateaubriand. The Museum of Contemporary Art started, which today has a collection of about 2,800 pieces.
In addition to the "Assis Chateaubriand" collection, the museum has 204 works by different techniques and different authors such as Cândido Portinari, Francisco Brennand, Telles Júnior, Ladjane Bandeira, among others. There is also the "Abelardo Rodrigues" collection, which includes 923 works, 109 correspondences, 68 photographs and 106 prints, acquired by the State Government in 1984.
Visiting hours: Tuesday to Friday, from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm; Saturday from 9am to 12pm; Sunday from 14h to 17h
