The remains of the island date from pre-Inca times and can be seen in the upper part During the colony and until the first years of the 20th century, the place was used as a political prison, but from 1970 the island became exclusive property of the taquileños. Taquile is characterized by its friendly inhabitants, who preserve their customs, traditions and clothing in the old fashion. The locals stand out for their laborious and fine textiles with symbolic symmetrical decorations, in strong colors, which reflect their Andean way of life, customs and beliefs.



Taquile is located 35 km east of the city of Puno, capital of the department of Puno in southern Peru. The island of Taquile is located in the bay of Chuchito, framed by the peninsulas of Capachica and Chucuito. Its extension is 6 km2, its maximum length of 5.5 km and its width of 1.5 km. The altitude between the port and the town varies slightly from 3 810 masl and 3 950 masl respectively. Because it is located in a high Andean area, approximately, the maximum temperature is 19ºC (66.2ºF) and the minimum is 3ºC (37.4ºF). The climate in the Andean region is cold and dry, with a four-month rainy season.



The island of Taquile is the largest on Lake Titicaca. The geographic space of the island is conducive for tourists to travel a large part of it, accompanied by the inhabitants, who form a population of approximately 1,700 inhabitants. The inhabitants of this island are known as “taquileños” and they are Quechua speakers since they inherited this language from their Andean ancestors and cultures.
